Open Flame Cooking Devices

Charcoal and LP-gas grills, barbecues, smokers (including pellet smokers), and similar appliances are considered open flame cooking devices.

Open flame cooking devices may not be used on combustible decks or balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction. The following exceptions apply:

  1. Where buildings and balconies are protected by an automatic fire sprinkler system – this means there are fire sprinklers both inside AND outside the building, including fire sprinklers that protect the deck/balcony area.
  2. LP-gas cooking devices that use small “camping” propane canisters (1lb capacity).
  3. Electric outdoor cooking appliances, when used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Storage

Propane cylinders larger than 2.5 pounds may not be stored in or transported through multifamily occupancies.

Electric Cooking Devices

Outdoor electric cooking devices may be operated on balconies or patios provided the cooking device is directly connected to an outside approved type electrical outlet and used per manufacturer’s instructions.

Exit Ways

Outdoor cooking devices cannot be located where they will block exit ways; including balconies, porches, patios or walkways.

Enforcement Responsibility

The Poudre Fire Authority strives to work with property managers and homeowners associations (HOA's) to heighten awareness of life safety items including open flame cooking. It is ultimately the responsibility of property managers, HOA's, and occupants to take responsibility for and abide by fire codes, lease agreements and management policies.
