Code Compliance Division

The Code Compliance Division conducts inspections of existing buildings, special events, temporary structures and special amusement occupancies (haunted houses and similar structures). The focus of these inspections is to ensure these occupancies and their fire protection systems are safe and compliant with adopted codes.

Fire Protection and Life Safety Systems

These systems are designed and installed to alert, protect, and evacuate occupants in the event of an emergency. These can include fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, hood and duct systems, and smoke control systems; among others. It is the responsibility of the building owner or their designee to ensure these systems are maintained and operational.

One of the inspections required to by completed is for Fire Alarm Systems. In an effort to help guide contractors who perform these inspections, we have created an informational guide sheet about those requirements. Click here for that guide sheet.

In the event a fire protection system of an occupied building is out of service, is being modified due to construction, or if there have been a significant number of nuisance alarms, a fire watch of the affected building is required. To establish a fire watch, please review and submit the Poudre Fire Authority Fire Watch Agreement.

Special Event Operational Permits

The Code Compliance Division is responsible for the review, approval, and inspection of special events, assembly occupancies and certain operations associated with special events. These include:

  • Outdoor festivals
  • Fireworks and pyrotechnics
  • Performance with fire
  • Tents and canopies
  • Ongoing operation of large assembly occupancies
  • Temporary change of occupancy applications
  • Burn permits
  • Haunted Houses and Corn Mazes
  • Use of Explosives/Blasting

Investigations Division

The Investigations Division is responsible for determining the origin and cause of all fires that occur within the Poudre Fire Authority jurisdiction. Successful origin and cause determinations allow us to identify risky behaviors or unsafe products in the community, as these factors are identified we can deploy education and preventative measures to prevent future fires. If it is determined that criminal behavior caused or contributed to the fire, our fire investigators will conduct a criminal investigation, in cooperation with our Law Enforcement partners, with the goal of identifying and prosecuting those responsible. In addition to identifying criminal acts, data obtained from fire investigations can be useful for civil litigation, insurance claim settlement, product recalls, creating targeted public education, and failure analysis of fire and live safety systems (fire alarm and sprinkler systems).

Investigation Reports

Fire investigation reports created by the Poudre Fire Authority are a matter of public record and can be released upon request. Investigation reports that are not closed or those that are subject to an ongoing criminal investigation will not be released. If you would like to request a report, please complete the Open Records Request Form.
