Please watch this video to learn how to use a fire extinguisher.

PFA recommends and teaches the P.A.S.S. method.

P.A.S.S.

Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you, and release the locking mechanism.

Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.

Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly. Most household and workplace fire extinguishers will only last between 10 to 15 seconds so they are only effective on small fires.

Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side.

We don't want anyone to be faced with a situation where they use a fire extinguisher for the first time during a real fire. That's why PFA's specialists are happy to work with businesses, homeowner's associations and other organizations or groups to provide free training on how to effectively use a fire extinguisher to safely escape a fire.

Thanks to a Firehouse Subs grant, PFA purchased a laser-driven, simulated fire extinguisher from Bullex. Coupled with a digital training screen, trainees will be able to feel the weight of a real fire extinguisher as they use it to "put out" different types of simulated -- albeit life-like -- fires.

Trainings with this simulator can take place in a classroom, conference room, or other similar setting. PFA's trainers bring everything to you, saving you the time and hassle of purchasing real fire extinguishers to conduct employee trainings.

Topics covered include:

  • How an extinguisher works.
  • When to use an extinguisher and when not to use one.
  • How to use an extinguisher effectively.
  • Different types of extinguishers and their uses.

Note: Poudre Fire Authority does not supply, recharge or service fire extinguishers.

All requests must be submitted to PFA through this form at least three weeks in advance of the target training date.

Fire extinguisher training is only available for residents and business owners within PFA's service area. Please refer to our service area map to determine if this applies to you.

As our team gives fire safety education in Poudre School District classrooms in October, training classes for businesses will be paused until November
