PFA smoke alarms

Through our targeted smoke and carbon monoxide alarm-installation program, PFA staff members install hundreds of smoke alarms in high-risk, low-income homes each year.  Data compiled in 2018 show an increase in the overall number of alarms installed throughout PFA's 235-square-mile service area and, as a result, a reduction in 911 calls from people in the

targeted neighborhoods following installation events. This program not only increases residents' safety, but also stems the rising tide of 911 calls to which firefighters respond 24/7/365.

Other PFA Alarm-Related Services

  • PFA firefighters and staff members will teplace batteries in smoke detectors for those unable to safely access smoke detector units (such as elderly or disabled residents).

  • Provide and install battery operated smoke detectors for those who need financial assistance.

How it Works

  • These services are available to homeowners only.
  • Residents living in rental properties should obtain smoke and carbon monoxide alarms from their landlord, who is legally required to provide both.
  • Similarly, these services are meant for individuals who need assistance, and not Homeowners Associations or building/property managers.
  • PFA can only help people with battery changes for alarms that are at 12 feet or below.
    • We are somewhat limited by our equipment and have limitations as to what our firefighters can safely do.
    • We recommend that people work with a home service company to service and install alarms that are placed in a home higher than 12 feet.
    • We also recommend that, if alarms are located that high, people move them to a place where they can more easily access them to test the batteries each month.

PFA does NOT service hard-wired smoke alarms

  • Poudre Fire Authority does not install, maintain, inspect or repair hardwired smoke alarm systems. The following third-party companies may be able to provide assistance:
  • Fort Collins Handyman: 970-599-1121
  • Brad Co: 970-231-1904
  • Handyman Matters: 970-482-0660
  • NoCo Home Services: 970-480-1112
