Division: Operations

Salary Range: $76,228.09 Annually (2025 Pay Plan)

POSITION SUMMARY: Under direct supervision, participates in firefighting, technical rescue, hazardous materials, emergency medical calls and other calls for assistance. Participates in inspection and maintains firefighting and emergency equipment, apparatus, fire stations and grounds; participates in occupancy inspections and related activities; and participate in public education and information activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, ROLES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.

  • Provides outstanding service and performs duties as necessary to best serve customers in the PFA response area.
  • Ensures PFA customers receive the highest quality care in all interactions.
  • Responds to variety of emergency scenes including medical, rescue and fire response calls.
  • Maintains fire apparatus, quarters, buildings, equipment, and grounds.
  • Administers medical care to ill or injured individuals at an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) level; performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR); and operates automatic external defibrillator (AED).
  • Maintains knowledge of and skill in policies and protocols for a variety of fire and EMS disciplines.
  • Uses a variety of tools such as ladders, extrication equipment, hand and power tools to perform emergency response tasks and to protect life and property.
  • Communicates with supervisors during emergency incidents using radios.
  • Routinely participates in training, drills, demonstrations, and courses in a variety of disciplines.
  • Drives and operates firefighting vehicles and equipment.
  • Conducts public-education activities and responds to calls or inquiries from the public.
  • May provide Advance Life Support (ALS) care as firefighter-paramedic.
  • May be required to drive fire apparatus.
  • Uses computer systems to prepare reports and other communications.
  • Works a 24-hour rotating schedule, including holidays and weekends, with overtime and emergency call-ins on an as-needed basis.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the necessary functions of this position.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED is required.

Desired Education and Experience:

  • Education beyond a high school diploma.
  • Skilled Trade(s) certification. Skills or trades that require mechanical and/or technical expertise.
  • Transferable work experience.
  • Volunteer or career fire experience.
  • BLS or ALS experience.
  • Experience working and making decisions in a high-stress, team environment.
  • Experience working within a defined chain of command.

Licensing/Certifications/Registrations

  • Must possess or be able to acquire, and maintain an unrestricted, valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to meet PFA insurability requirements.
  • Colorado EMT required for ongoing employment as a PFA Firefighter. For entry level Firefighter, current National Registry or Colorado Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification is required prior to starting academy.
  • For entry level Firefighter, successful completion of Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) required prior to conditional offer of employment.
  • Within four (4) years of hire, complete PFA requirements for Acting Engineer, and test for certification within CMCB policy.
  • Within six (6) years of hire, complete PFA requirements for Acting Lieutenant.

  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage, and to interpret bar graphs. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with various situations where limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency and competency in the skills that are described in the NFPA 1001, the Standard for firefighter professional qualifications.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:

  • Use hands to handle or feel objects.
  • Operate hand and power tools, equipment, and vehicle controls.
  • Stand, walk and sit.

  • Climb or balance on ladders, roofs, and other high places. Maneuver over obstacles and uneven terrain.
  • Stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and operate in a confined space with limited visibility.
  • Talk, hear, and smell.

The employee must occasionally:

  • Lift and/or move more than 100 pounds while wearing protective clothing and self- contained breathing apparatus.
  • Operate in super-heated atmospheres while performing firefighting duties including but not limited to dragging hose weighing up to 150 pounds, carrying firefighting tools weighing 80 pounds, effecting rescue of victims, and operating power tools weighing over 75 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus with vision correctable to 20/20.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee would encounter while performing the essential functions of this job.

Office and field environment; emergency firefighting, rescue, and response environment; work at heights on structures and ladders; work with water; travel from site to site; work closely with others. Regularly exposed to loud noises and vibration. Frequently works near moving mechanical parts. Exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and risk of electrical shock. Occasionally works in high, precarious places, near explosives, and possibly the risk of radiation.
