PFA Fire Safety HouseThe Children's Fire Safety House has been developed and designed to teach the correct home escape method and help reduce fire, burn, and scald injuries and deaths among children. It will accomplish this by giving youngsters hands-on experience in fire and burn prevention.
The Fire Safety House is an integral part of the Poudre School District elementary schools teaching about fire and burn prevention. It is also actively used by many other groups and organizations to teach fire safety. As of July of 2001 the fire department has taught over 40,000 children about fire safety using the Fire Safety House. The Fire Safety House is a 28 foot mobile trailer featuring the rooms of a house that represent the greatest hazard for fires, scalds, and other burns: a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and a living room with a fireplace. It also includes the following special features: A machine which fills the house with non-toxic smoke to simulate fire conditions and show children the importance of crawling to safety.
A heating element in the bedroom door. Children will feel the door before opening it to learn that a warm door is a sign of fire on the other side. A portable chain ladder extending from the second floor bedroom window, allowing children to practice emergency escapes with assistance from a firefighter. Safety features such as fire extinguishers and smoke detectors. A fully equipped kitchen for teaching in about toaster, microwave safety, turning pot handles in, placing combustibles too close to the stove, and about GFI outlets.
A fully equipped bedroom/bathroom for teaching scald prevention, placing an electrical item too close to the sink and crawling out of bed under the smoke. Please browse through the additional pictures of the safety house to see what it is like. For more information on this program and others please call the Poudre Fire Authority at 221-6570. |
